Resumes stimulate lots of conversation amongst recruitment consultants and hiring managers alike. Many like resumes, many dislike them. One thing is for certain, whether you think resumes are good, bad or ugly, resumes still serve a critical role in securing you an invite to interview.

It’s nearly 2022, and time to dust off those old resumes, grab a coffee and sit down to write or refresh your resume. We know this is easier said than done.

We see resumes in all shapes, sizes, colours and file formats. After speaking with our experienced consultants, we have compiled this list of useful tips.

Firstly put yourself in the shoes of the person who will be reading your resume, and remember this person has the intent of hiring you. What are they looking for? What do they want to read? They want to know your previous experience, achievements, qualifications and career objective; they don’t necessarily want to know about your fantastic interpersonal skills and communication skills.

“Keep it simple”

In order to write a professional resume you will want to keep it simple. In your opening paragraph outline your career objective, and how the position you are applying for will help you achieve your career goals. Market yourself to the organisation.

Do’s

  • Make it easy to read
  • Include what you’ve done and how that relates to what you want to be doing
  • Include your career summary
  • Focus on specific achievements within your individual roles, not just your responsibilities
  • Every job is different, change your resume depending on the position for which you are applying for
  • Save in .doc or .pdf file formats
  • Update regularly – you aren’t the same person with the same skills you had last year!

Don’ts

  • Don’t talk in the third person; your resume is a personal document
  • Don’t rely on spellcheck!
  • Don’t use fluffy intros – get to the point

Ask any number of people what their ideal long weekend is and we have no doubt the answers will be many and varied. So how should you spend your upcoming long weekend? It’s a question on many Australian’s lips right now and with the states varying in their advice (and indeed in their restrictions limitations) we are sure that what will work for one most definitely won’t work for all.

We are entering this long weekend with two words in mind: intention and balance. You don’t have to plan every moment, and you don’t have to leave your home for your weekend to leave you feeling recharged and happier.

So if you are not sure how to make the most of upcoming long weekend, or perhaps you are feeling fed up thinking of new ways to spent that time, then here are some ideas we’ve put together:

1. Plan a staycation

Yes we know the old staycation has pushed its limits this year, but we are convinced that holidaying in your backyard can still allow you to reap the benefits of a long weekend. A staycation may involve visiting a local winery or packing the car for an entire day out, it may mean hiring the beach shack or it could be as simple as hitching a tent in your *actual* backyard. Either way, we suggest sticking to our original plan of making it intentional. Put the effort in to make your staycation special.

2. Digital hiatus

Set those limits on your devices and stick to them, we’ve become slaves to these technological ‘things’ and the result is that we don’t ever fully disconnect from our work (or anything else). There are short and long term effects to us being so connected to the online world through our smart phone useage and its important to balance that connection carefully.

3. Prepare at work

End your work week with how you want to return after the long weekend, clear the email inbox and start your Tuesday to do list now. The benefits of “to do lists” are vast but importantly it allows you to see the smaller tasks beside the broad or significant tasks and it allows your brain to mentally prepare for what it needs to do.

4. Exercise

If you are already nailing the exercise regime then keep it up, but if you are needing the prompt to get going – then let this long weekend be it. Physical activity has been proven to benefit us not only physically but also mentally, emotionally and psychologically.

5. Enjoy nature

If possible, combine tips number 4 and 5. Jess, our Senior Recruitment Consultant loves combining the outdoors and exercise together. She can often be found with her partner and gorgeous dogs climbing one of the neighbouring mountains of Canberra within the national parks.

Like exercise, nature, in and of itself has been recognised as having a multitude of benefits psychologically, spiritually and physiologically. So if a walk in nature isn’t possible for you this weekend, we suggest taking your morning cuppa by the window or outside so that you can breath in all of natures bounty.

6. Spring Clean

If the Minimalists, or Marie Kondo didn’t inspire you to clear out the junk cupboard then maybe Netflix’s new show ‘Get Organized’ with the Home Edit might just do it for you. If your long weekend is likely to involve getting ontop of the ever mounting washing/folding and general tidying like how our Administration manager Gretchen forsees her long weekend then we think it’s worth digging in and Spring cleaning at a level that is sure to feel cleansing at a spiritual level.

7. Treat yo’self

Take a page out of Donna’s book. But if restrictions, or you know, time, money, children don’t allow you to hire a sports car and shop till you drop then find a way to treat yo’self in a less extravagant manner.
We recommend locating a local candle maker, buying a bookg and purchasing a beautiful locally produced bottle of wine (or fresh tea) and running yourself a bath. 1,2,3…relax.

8. Tackle a big project

You know those “never quite get to” projects? The items on that neverending “list”? A three day weekend is the perfect opportunity to tackle these. Go on, paint that wall, build that garden bed, make that side table. With our initial thoughts in mind we think you should make sure you balance those big projects or your weekend of gardening is broken up with breaks that let you relax in a different way.

You got this!

9. Bake or Create

Did you know that creative expression is deeply connected to overall wellbeing. Baking is a productive form of self expression and communication as well as making music or painting. The stress outlet that these activities offer is immense, and with stress related to many mental and physical problems introducing a way to express yourself creatively is incredibly important.

10. Do Nothing

Don’t feel guilty for sitting and doing abso.lutely nothing. Read that magazine or book, watch netflix or stare out the window. 2020 has thrown us one stressful year, its time we grab those moments and make them ours. Ever tried meditation? Now might be a good time to give it a whirl.

11. The left of field plans

Maybe the weather isn’t great, or you really are after something a bit different – Rachel recommends visiting Quizzic Alley which is a Harry Potter themed store in Fyshwick. This is a place for the big or little kids and we’d recommend you visit here at the start of your weekend and maximise your time there and any purchase you make.

Well-being doesn’t have one set meaning or one set application, but the state and how we apply it to our emotional, physical and mental wellness remains the same – to seek balance. I know from experience that it can be hard to know where to start when you want to achieve a better balance with your wellbeing. Thankfully there are a few things you can do that can improve your wellbeing pretty quickly.

Below you’ll find my top tips for giving your wellbeing a boost in the right direction.

Hydrate – We all recognise the importance of drinking enough water and maintaining hydration. Having a water bottle on your desk or on hand in your workplace will greatly increase your chances of maintaining hydration allowing you to sip on it throughout the day. If you struggle to drink water on its own, add a splash of fresh lemon.

Get back to nature – Spending time in or around nature can greatly improve your state of mind. There really is nothing quite like a dose of fresh air to have you feeling good. Make the time to take a walk during your day or If your work space allows for it you could add a plant to your desk as a way of bringing nature to you.

Move – Do some form of exercise daily. This doesn’t have to be anything as intense as a gym workout or a run. It can be something simple like a brisk walk or doing some yoga stretches. According to Headspace being active will not only offer immediate physiological benefits but will also impact other key elements of wellbeing, such as sleep and stress levels.

Selfcare – Choose to do something deliberately to take care of your mental, emotional or physical health. This can greatly enhance your mood and reduce any stress or anxiety. Try to do this daily. It could be something simple like taking a bath at the end of the day, taking some time to enjoy a cup of tea, sit out in your garden in the sunshine, or take a walk or listening to your favourite podcast.

Sleep – When you are tired, everything can be become a little harder to deal with. Your body systems won’t function normally. Lack of sleep can affect your focus, impairs your performance your immune system and long term it will start to affect your overall health. Try to go to bed at the same time every night and rise at the same time every morning to form a sleep routine. If you have trouble falling asleep, perhaps reading at bed time or listening to music can help you to overcome this. I found some more great practical tips over at Beyond Blue’s website.

Eat – We all know the importance of eating well. Having a healthy & nutritious diet can help with memory, focus, energy & overall mood. Try to create some healthy eating habits that you can adapt into your daily routine. This can be as simple as swapping out your morning tea biscuits for a piece of fruit. In the same way that eating well benefits you throughout the day, eating unhealthy can leave you feeling bloated and lethargic and put you on the treaded blood sugar rollercoaster making it more difficult to get through your day.

Read – Not only does reading strengthen the brain muscle, it also helps to build vocabulary, reduces stress & can help alleviate depression. My advice here would be to consider the content that you reading. If you have certain topics that you know will affect your mood negatively, steer away from those as much as possible & focus on some positive reading material on topics that enrich your life or soul.

Social Media Detox – We all recognise the importance of taking a break from social media occasionally. If you are aware that your social media habits are having an affect on the way you feel, then it is even more important to take a break. Having a social media detox can improve your health and declutter your mind.  You don’t have to take a full break from your socials, you can simply take some time to take back control of your news feeds by unfollowing anything that makes you feel anxious or unhappy.  Maybe reach out for other ways to stay connected to those you care about that doesn’t rely on social media.

Meditate – if you can carve away a bit of time each day to sit quietly, then adding meditation into your daily routine can really help with your overall wellbeing. There are many science based benefits to mastering meditation including improved self awareness, better focus and concentration.

Treat – Don’t forget to treat yourself occasionally. This is so important for maintaining overall health and wellbeing. The idea is to have something to look forward to you can even use this to reward yourself. While you can treat yourself extravagantly, your treat could also be something really simple such as catching up with friends for coffee, having a massage or a facial, or taking a road trip on your weekend. During this strange year incorporating treats into the restrictions that you are currently living under can be a wonderful way to have something to look forward to. Treats should involve things you might not always do for yourself, and may even involve a bit of self care – its going to look differently for everyone but don’t underestimate how a treat can help.

Music – Listening to music can really alter your mood. Music can really assist with feelings of anxiety and the correct type of music can help with sleep and mental awareness. Personally I love to put a record on (yes that is a thing still, I’m old school like that) and just sit back quietly and listen to each and every word.

Importantly, if you find that your wellbeing is not improving after making conscious steps to improve it, OR if you are finding that your mindset is preventing you from taking positive steps then reach out to your support network. Remember, it is okay to not be okay and there are organisations that are established and have strengthened their presence this year to provide the services that people are requiring.

Whilst I was at home last night I decided it would be a good time to start reading a book I have been aiming to get to for a long time. One of the small pleasures I have not been able to get to with 3 kids under 7. This particular book however ‘Dauntless’ by Rach Ranton discusses lessons in leadership from a military and corporate perspective. It got me thinking about a few other books and articles I had read and how they matter in a practical sense within the workplace. Workplaces today are different from where they were in the past, and in 2020 our workplaces are having hurdles like we’ve never seen before, our success in the workplace hinges on the fundamentals of teamwork and leadership. For me it comes down to three core principals;

Inclusion – During Rach’s book she discusses team input and how the traditional method of leadership which tended to veer on the notion of dictatorship at times, needs to be re-thought. By providing input from the bottom up and turning mistakes into ‘lessons learned’ rather than opportunities to chastise can change the complete cohesion of a team and ensure that everyone feels valued. Within our workplace at Effective People we harness this philosophy in its truest form. We have hired from outside of industry in order to create an inclusive environment where input is key and our mistakes serve as the foundation for growth (But never make the same mistake twice!).

Culture – Strong Culture = Trust = Autonomy + Efficiency. This little equation is something I love, I think it speaks volumes and works both from a bottom up and top down perspective. At Effective People we promote a truly great culture. But the beauty of ‘culture’ is that its not the company that defies the culture but those that work within it. You cant just slap a table tennis table in the middle of an office and subsequently promote a great culture. Creating culture is something that is truly hard to do; its honestly identifying where you are now Vs where you want to be and having the strength as a leader to never waiver from the values that will create that culture. Culture takes time, its intangible.

Values – Values go hand in hand with the above (culture) in fact I believe that the values a company and a person have is the single biggest factor in developing culture…….both good and bad. Along with beliefs, attitudes and shared behaviours of a team. A great saying is ‘values decide our culture and culture decides our values’. They go hand in hand. I have always operated on the principal of 3 as it reminds me of  a triangle which is the strongest shape in the world. Every company should have 3 absolute non-negotiable core values or ‘pillars’ as I call them, due to them being the foundation of the business. Everything that is done within the walls of that business has to align with one, if not all of those values. Otherwise it is not in line with what we as a company are trying to achieve.

Leadership and teamwork are not easy, but through taking a methodical approach to analysing how your team is set up and how it functions and creating an environment that fosters continual improvement it can be somewhat less complex.

Yeah, I know, the catch phrase is new year, new me and I realise it usually applys calendar year and not financial year. But that’s not what my blog is about, so I thought a heading that captured the blog would be more pertinent. I guess what I really want to get across in this article is some of my observations surrounding the value added benefits that apply to Contractors and Casual employees.

Recently starting a new role myself within a boutique family owned recruitment firm Effective People, and coming from outside of industry, my eyes have been opened to a whole new world (try saying that without singing the Aladdin song….yes I’m a Disney buff). Recently at work we have been discussing how to best provide our candidates and current casual employees with more than just great service. So the question was put to me “What do our contractors really want”? This prompted us to evaluate our current service offering. So with help from our Payroll provider PayMe we created a list of the things we feel are valuable to our potential candidates and current employees. This list included;

  1. The ability to ‘bank’ their hours in order to use them for a holiday or to sustain themselves in between contracts
  2. The ability to have a no frills and easy to apply salary sacrifice avenue for certain items that are of importance to them
  3. A way to take on a contract that saw them away from home and family and still having applicable benefits
  4. An interconnected system that opened up avenues to various offerings through partner programs, like novated leasing etc.

In the end we took a look at the whiteboard and realised that with our current tailored offering for our contracts we are sitting in a really great space, we have created an offering of benefits that I personally wasn’t aware could be applied to our contractors.

Whilst I believe that the true reason people choose recruitment firms is based on a solid relationship and candidate first approach. I guess it also helps to be able to assist our contractors outside of their contracts also. Creating a list of added benefits that see them maintaining a happy life balance almost acts like a cherry on top of the cake!

Struggling to remember what your manager asked you to do this morning? Are you confused about your daily duties? Then say no more! From previously working in childcare and moving into an admin role I struggled with prioritising my work and the tasks that I was receiving throughout the day.  I had to find ways that worked for me and allowed me to stay on top of tasks throughout the day.

To do list.

My Manager, Holli, got everyone Kiki K notepads and let me tell you, it has changed my life. As soon I get in each day I write my top 3 priorities for the day. This allows me to acknowledge tasks that are of high importance or need to be completed ASAP. After this, I write down all the things that I need to do for the day. When asked by any of my other colleagues or manager to complete a task I write it down straight away, so it doesn’t slip my mind. When completing the tasks throughout the day I highlight the ones I have completed so I know what I must prioritise next.

Calendar reminders.

Something I have picked up from other members in the office is setting reminders through your Calendar either on your phone or computer. When you do this, you can select when you want the reminder to occur and how often. This really helps me when I know I have to either send documents or an email at a certain time. I set a reminder for 15 minutes before to allow me to stop what I am currently doing and prepare the email. I’m not going to lie, sometimes I press snooze when I see the reminder but hey, don’t we all.

CLEAN

Every morning and afternoon I have to make sure that my desk is clean and that I have a clean inbox. This allows me to have a fresh and clear start and end of the day. I hate leaving work knowing that I haven’t replied to the emails from the previous day, plus this means extra work for the following day. When It comes to cleaning out your emails, the newer one always gets the most attention. If you are going to do a clean out it is best to start at the bottom, the older ones. Even replying to the oldest three emails will give you clarity!

Cleaning your desk is a must. There is no way that you would be able to stay focused with old paperwork covering your desk. Make sure that you’ve placed them in a folder or tucked away in your draw, only have the essentials out. The essentials should be a water bottle, pen and notebook.

Time flies, doesn’t it? Still unbelievable that we’re almost done with Winter and it’s time to start planning your celebratory getaway! This month we’re in Queensland and have listed three of the most amazing places you can experience, simply by jumping in the car and going for a drive! Whether you have a hatchback or an SUV, the below places are easily accessible and will make you appreciate Queensland just that little bit more after seeing them.

Up first – Springbrook Mountain, Gold Coast

1hr 35mins south of Brisbane. 23 million years ago a volcano erupted and formed this beautiful mountainous forest. Standing on this elevation means you can tell your friends and family that you’ve stood on a volcano, although old and dormant,  it’s still a volcano!! This place is not just a mountain, it has lookouts and waterfalls and canyons. Bring the swimmers (us Canberrans never think it’s that cold in QLD even if we’re mid-August) and your mini BBQ to cook up a decent lunch. A few other cool things about Springbrook that many people don’t know about is the rare wildlife and plants you see, including the glow-in-the-dark worms and mushrooms… Look out!

Second stop – Noosaville, Sunshine Coast

1hr 40 mins north of Brisbane. One would think we could steer you straight to the Gold Coast if you went to Springbrook Mountain. However, if you were to choose just one of the three places we’ve listed, this would have to be pushing for a first place. Noosaville is a dreamy little seaside village located on the foreshore, a 5-minute drive from Noosa Heads. A must visit is Hells Gates, it really is heavenly and this place is home to dolphins and turtles. Need I say more? In relation to food, Thomas Street and Gympie Terrace are littered with cafes and restaurants. Try and get to Red Emperor for amazing fish and chips, yep, I said amazing. In terms of activities, the world really is your oyster up this way. You can get on the Noosa Ferry, hire a jet-ski, kayak or boat, or even organise some surfing lessons if you’re keen to go a step above intense, gnarly!

Finally – Somerset Dam, Somerset

1hr 30 mins north-west of Brisbane. Boating camping fishing is BCF’n fun. This really is the case at Somerset Dam. Even if you don’t have a boat/kayak you can camp and fish and if you don’t camp or fish, you can swim! And if you don’t do any of that you can simply soak up the sun and enjoy the surrounding mountains in the family BBQ and picnic areas. This dam is one of Brisbane’s most important water catchments and stores over 900,000 megalitres. The dam wall itself is stunning at a length of over 300 metres long. Somerset Dam really is a hidden gem. If you’re in Brisbane, it’s city living with country benefits when you visit out this way.

LinkedIn – the “Facebook” for all things work related. You can connect with people worldwide, post, share and like relevant items, search for jobs/job seekers, the list goes on… If you’re not already signed up on the social media platform, you had better jump on it! Today, I’m going to provide you with a few tips to boost your LinkedIn profile and connections.

#1: Let’s get started – connect, connect, connect!

If you are new to LinkedIn, the first key to getting your profile out there is to start connecting with people. You need to make sure you are connecting with like-minded people who you 1) know personally or know of, 2) work in the same field, and 3) see potential opportunities with. An easy way to connect with others is to review LinkedIn’s suggested connections tab and go through that. You can then start setting small goals such as “This week I want to make 10 connections” and build your way up!

#2: Let’s get active – post, like, share!  

One of the most important aspects to any social media profile is ensuring that you are being active. Being active is as simple as doing the following, every 1-2 days:

  • Liking your connection’s posts
  • Sharing a relevant work article
  • Posting about something you have recently done/accomplished at work

It is essential that you add value to the whatever you post or share – talk specifically about your business/role and even include a call to action. It is also vital to make sure you are posting appropriately, with the right “lingo” being used. Therefore, you are having a joke and using a lighthearted tone with a subject but then stern/formal with another.

Also, if you are getting involved with other people’s posts, there is a higher chance of them reciprocating that when you post. Because of all of these interactions, you are then introduced to more connections and your profile continues to grow!

#3: Let’s get out there – advertise, advertise, advertise!  

Another way to build your profile is by advertising it through as many possible channels. Personally, I have added my LinkedIn profile to my signature block – so everyone can click on that whenever we converse via email. This is a really great method to grow your connections, you will be surprised at how many people will come through this avenue. To continue growing, you can share your profile on the following platforms:

  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • Twitter

You can also share your profile manually with the direct URL and gain connections that way!

Do you work long hours? Or are you just plain old lazy in the afternoons? I get it… We all get it. Its Winter in Canberra and it’s damn cold outside!

Don’t tell me you’re one of those people whose slow-cooker is slowly but surely accruing dust in the corner cupboard?! Don’t be that person! Using your slow cooker is so easy and let me tell you, it is CHEAP as well! Not to mention, slow-cooked meals are the most perfect thing to come home too on a cold winters night! The smell of a home cooked meal (without doing much) is the most welcoming feeling.

The following recipes are my absolute favourite to do in the slow cooker and they can be tailored to your taste and to be honest I never use a recipe book once I’ve made the dish once because I am such a MasterChef that I can’t help but tweak it to suit my taste!

Chilli Con Carne

Have you actually eaten Chilli Con Carne before? Honestly, it is delectable and can be made to taste, depending on your palate! This is something different to your standard Bolognese sauce. It’s also a great vegan/vegetarian option for my veg friends out there! Honestly, how could you go past it? Spice up your Tuesday night!

Lamb Shank Soup

Seriously, lamb falling off the bone – yes, please! This is a recipe I never do the same! I use all the basics; celery, carrot, onion and rosemary but I genuinely just chuck in whatever I have that is starting to get soft in the fridge – zucchini, potato, pumpkin, mushrooms, just whatever you want! Maybe you have some 4 bean mix in the cupboard, I don’t know but put it in! I also change this from a soup to a stew, and sometimes chuck in some pasta! GO crazy people!

Chicken Cacciatore

Chicken Cacciatore is a seriously yum Italian stew, comfort food for sure and easy peasy! Chicken, onion, herbs, veggies in a thick and rich tomato sauce.. I mean who would say no?? Talk about a luxurious winter meal! Oh, and btw I don’t mean your mums version of chicken cacciatore back in the day with overcooked chicken and sloppy veggies, this is one delicious dish and you will be going back for seconds for sure!

Mongolian Beef

I have never met a person who doesn’t like Mongolian Beef (or a vegetable alternatively)! It is spicy and sweet and all things delish! And it only takes 10 minutes to prep! This one is made for those busy parents/shift workers who have no time to prep or cook. I can promise you won’t be picking up your phone for the local Chinese takeout once you’ve made this dish – and once you’ve experimented with Asian meals in a slow cooker, the world is your oyster!

Lemon & Rosemary Chicken

This is a dish that I invented and much like the Lamb Shank Soup, you can literally chuck anything and everything into this. Whatever you have laying around in your fridge/cupboard, chuck it in! Chicken and rosemary is often questioned, but I would be willing to say it is on par with lamb and rosemary – it brings out a whole new side of chicken I’m sure you didn’t even know existed. You’re welcome. Brown the chicken, chuck in all your veggies and load it up with chicken stock and white wine and boom – sexified slow cooker chicken.

Vegan Mexican Bowl

Another option is to chuck some beans, cayenne pepper, jalapenos, carrots, onions and any other veggies you’re feeling for into your slow cooker. Add some vegetable stock and black beans and let it cook! When it’s ready, you just need to add some brown rice and top with some lime juice and salsa for an extra spice and that Mexican flavour!

Dreaming about a holiday, new shoes, buying a house or new car? Having some trouble saving?  Saving can be a difficult task when you have constant influx of bills, however, dreams can come true. Check out my tips and experience of how I saved for my brand-new Volkswagen Golf… along with other bits and bobs!

Step 1 – Vision boards:

To start saving you need to have a goal. Start by writing down things you want to or need to save for. Have a clear vision as to what you want to save for and how much you will need to save. Cut out places from a magazine or Images of locations you want to visit. By visualizing your goals, it can help you focus on the bigger picture. I had a cork board in my home office pinned with Golfs… Seeing that every day, reminded me what I was working towards and giving me that little extra motivation. Now it’s covered in different properties…

Step 2 – Set a date:

Setting a date of when you want to buy the car, go on your holiday or buy those new sparkly shoes is really important because you’re left accountable for something with yourself. This can also help with working out how much you need to put away each week.

Step 3 – Budgeting:

Budgeting is something that very little people enjoy. According to the Cambridge dictionary, budgeting is defined as the process of calculating how much money you must earn or save during a particular period of time, and of planning how you will spend it.

This is how you will save money. Start off by setting aside a certain amount of money each pay day. This can be anywhere between $5 to $100. Now it doesn’t seem like a lot, however, this simple change can make a big impact in the future.

To keep track of how much money you put aside, get a notebook, blank document of excel spreadsheet prepared. Write the date down and how much you set aside that pay day and have a total at the end. You could even have this sitting next to your goal amount to see how far you have to go!

Step 4 – Don’t be too hard on yourself:

Life happens… things come up that you have to pay for, celebrate or enjoy. Don’t be too harsh on yourself when you’re not able to put away the exact amount that pay period. Just work hard to hit the target the next time!

Step 5 – It’s time to purchase:

When buying your new car, house or holiday make sure you get the best deal! Speaking with friends or family who are involved or have experience in that industry can really help with securing the best deal possible.
